SSR Airport Arrival Guide 2025: What to Expect at Mauritius Airport

Arriving at Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport (MRU)
SSR International Airport is the main gateway to Mauritius. It is located in Plaine Magnien on the southeast coast, about 10 minutes from Blue Bay and Mahébourg, and roughly 45–80 minutes from most tourist resorts.
Step 1: Disembarkation and immigration
After leaving the aircraft, follow the signs to immigration. Have your passport, completed landing card (if required), and return/onward ticket ready. The process is usually smooth, but queues can form when multiple long-haul flights land at the same time.
Step 2: Baggage reclaim
Baggage carousels are on the ground floor. Luggage usually arrives within 20–40 minutes of landing. There are trolleys nearby and a small duty-free shop before customs.
Step 3: Customs and exit
Customs checks are generally quick for tourists. Declare any restricted items if asked. Once you exit the secure area, you enter the public arrivals hall.
Meeting your pre-booked driver
If you have booked with Mauritius Airport Transfer Service, your driver waits in the arrivals hall holding a name board. They will help with your luggage and escort you to the vehicle.

Official taxi stand vs unofficial touts
Inside and just outside the terminal, you may be approached by individuals offering taxi rides. These are unofficial operators. While some are genuine drivers, prices are not fixed and quality varies.
The official taxi counter is on the arrivals level. Staff there will give you a printed fare based on your destination. This is a safer option than touts, but still more expensive than pre-booking with a fixed private transfer.
Common scams and how to avoid them
- “Per person” pricing: Always confirm the total price is per vehicle, not per passenger.
- “Your driver did not come”: If you have pre-booked, do not leave with someone else claiming your driver is unavailable. Contact us on WhatsApp first.
- Forced shop stops: Some drivers take tourists to commission-based shops. With us, your transfer is direct to your accommodation.
- Currency confusion: Agree the currency before paying. Paying in Mauritian Rupees usually gives the best value.
